This position is with the University of Michigan Rehabilitation Engineering Program (UMREP), a division of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. UMREP is a hospital-based rehabilitation engineering and assistive technology service delivery program and is part of the award winning Michigan Medicine system (in 2019 named one of world’s best hospitals by Newsweek, ranked 5th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals”). UMREP is committed to improving the lives of the patients in our care through the application of technology and engineering accommodations that can enhance function, performance, independence, and quality of life. We are looking for an experienced rehabilitation engineer to provide clinical services to our patients. The selected candidate will integrate innovative skills and other assets with those of our rehabilitation team to provide holistic care, and add to our research and educational missions.
Deliver clinical services to patients including evaluation, training, prescription, and implementation of assistive technologies; in the areas of computer access, tablet and smartphone access, environmental control, augmentative communication with the goal of supporting activities of daily living and vocational, academic, child developmental, therapeutic activities, and adaptive sports and recreation needs.
Design and develop new accommodation and rehabilitation technologies and modifications and incorporate them to meet clinical, educational, and research needs.
Investigate new technologies, service delivery methods, and research opportunities that support program missions.
Provide engineering and technical advice to health care professionals relating to assistive technologies for people with disability.
Collaborate with other members of the rehabilitation team and professionals within the hospital campus and community to meet patient care, education, and research needs.
Represent the Rehabilitation Engineering Program at necessary internal and external clinical, research, and educational meetings and conferences.
Be a liaison for Rehabilitation Engineering and steward of assistive technologies to the medical and academic campuses and greater community.
Mentor Rehabilitation Engineers and supervise interns, students, and volunteers in regards to clinical activities and responsibilities under the guidance of the clinical director.
Bachelor’s degree in biomedical, mechanical, electrical, or computer engineering is required; Masters degree in one of these fields is preferred. RESNA Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) certification will be required (current certification or certified within approximately one year of hire). Clinical experience in computer, cell phone, and tablet access, switch access, environmental controls, and AAC is required.
Experience and knowledge of mechanical, electrical, electronic and computer engineering as well as computer hardware and software, beyond educational requirements above, is desirable. Experience in programming, modelling, and work with single-board microcontrollers (Arduino, Raspberry Pi) is sought after. Experience working with individuals with disability and teaching and working with children is desired.
