The Assistive Technology Specialist (ATS) is a member of the Disability Services Office. The ATS performs a variety of tasks centered around ensuring ADA/508 compliance for campus-wide assistive technology while providing requisite on-campus services/accommodations for Marymount students with disabilities.
The ATS is responsible for providing online accommodations with alternative media, ensuring compliances, and educating the staff and faculty on the implementation of ADA/508 legal obligations/requirements. The ATS will also assist with general instructional design, development, and training as needed by the larger College community.
This position will report directly to the Director of Academic Access and Disability Services and will work collaboratively with the Coordinator of Disability Services.
Characteristic Duties & Responsibilities:
The Assistive Technology Specialist (ATS) will have critical responsibilities to make college electronic and information technology (EIT) accessible to people with disabilities. Specifically, the ATS will:
Coordinate accommodations for students with disabilities that involve assistive technology. Oversee and participate in the conversion of all documents (maintaining adherence to Federal copyright laws), correspondence, course materials, and texts in print or electronic formats into accessible formats for students with disabilities. Provide assessments for individual students regarding their need for assistive technology and make recommendations to students about technology that might be most effective for them. Function as a consultant and act as a liaison with IT department and the College Library. Provide assistive technology education/training – individually and in workshops for the College community. Maintain inventory of assistive equipment and technology, including software. Ensure all equipment and technology is current and updated in a timely fashion. Troubleshoot assistive technology installations and implementations. Actively participate in professional networks to ensure continued learning about relevant laws. Identify, review, and assess current trends in assistive technology for the College community. Establish priorities and manage the budget for assistive technology inventory campus-wide. Other duties as required.
BA degree, MS preferred, in Education, Assistive Technology, Educational Technology, Instructional Design or related field. PLUS, minimum 2 years of experience in assessing accessibility compliance and creating strategies to meet legal requirements. Providing assistive technology in a college setting preferred. OR Bachelor’s degree, MS preferred, in Education, Assistive Technology, Educational Technology, Instructional Design or related field PLUS must either possess or have the ability and willingness to pursue an online Assistive Technology Certificate (i.e. CSUN ATACP or RESNA, ATP) within the first year of employment. Experience providing assistive technology in a college setting preferred.
Strong communication, organization, interpersonal, problem-solving abilities. Sensibility and ability to handle confidential data and interface compassionately with students with learning, physical, and psychological challenges. 2 years’ experience working with Students with Disabilities and determining appropriate accommodations, preferably in higher educational setting, in assessing accessibility compliance and creating strategies to meet legal requirements. OR Universal Design experience or related field PLUS Assistive Technology Certificate (i.e. CSUN ATACP or RESNA ATP). Familiarity with Kurzweil 3000, Browsealoud, OCR& Scanning Technology, Screen Readers (JAWS), Dragon Dictate, LMS, Ally, and Smart Pens preferred.
